What it means

Start with the rules that can cost you money before you place a trade: which legal entity you are onboarded with, how the broker is paid, and what happens to your funds if it fails. A good fit is a broker whose cheapest account matches how you actually trade — not the one with the biggest welcome banner. Spreads, platforms and bonuses come after those three questions, not before.

What to check
✓Confirm the regulator and licence number for the entity you will sign up with — not the group's best licence.
✓Match the account type to your style: raw spread plus commission for scalping, all-in spreads for infrequent trades.
✓Check withdrawal methods, fees and typical times before you deposit, not after.
✓Read the swap, inactivity and currency-conversion fee schedules — the three costs that never make the comparison table.
✓Confirm your instruments, trading hours and automation (EAs, copy trading) are permitted.

Common mistakes

✕Choosing on leverage alone. 1:500 says nothing about execution or safety; most funded traders never use more than 1:20.
✕Trusting the group's best licence. An ASIC licence on the homepage does not protect you if your account sits with the Seychelles entity.
✕Ignoring the fee schedule PDF. Inactivity and conversion fees are usually in a document linked from the footer, not the pricing page.
