Forex brokers for South African traders in 2026
In South Africa, the licence that matters is on the company that holds your trading account. Several big brands hold an FSCA licence only on a local intermediary, while your account sits with a group company overseas. Of the brokers we review, three have an FSCA-authorised South African company: Exness, IG and XM. Each works differently, so read the column on which company holds the account.
South African options side by side
None of the three gives you a South African company as both licence holder and counterparty for a new account. That is common for international brokers. It does not make them unsafe, but the protections that apply are mainly those of the country where your account is held.
How South African broker licences work
An FSP number shows that a company is authorised under the FAIS Act to give advice or act as an intermediary. An ODP authorisation under the Financial Markets Act is what lets a company issue over-the-counter derivatives such as CFDs itself. A broker's local company can hold an FSP number while only introducing you to an overseas group company that runs the account. So look for three things: the FSP number, whether the company issuing the CFD has ODP authorisation, and which company your client agreement names.
Opening an offshore account from South Africa
If your account is held abroad, the money you send counts towards your offshore allowances under exchange control rules. IG, for example, says South African residents need the relevant tax clearance to use their foreign investment allowance for its UK-held international account. Speak to your bank about the limits before you fund an offshore account.
What about the other brokers we review?
Pepperstone and IC Markets do not hold an FSCA licence, though both accept some South African clients through overseas companies. FxPro has long cited FSP 45052, but recent independent reads of the FSCA register list that number as lapsed, so check its status yourself before relying on it. None of the other brokers we review lists an FSCA-authorised South African company.
